  • The answer to this question is yes - you are still allowed to visit the grave of your loved one whilst a funeral is being conducted ….... but please

    • Please supervise pets and children.

    • Keep a respectful distance from the family.

    • Speak if spoken to (often it is nice for family members to talk to others who have loved ones buried at the grounds).

    • Refrain from having a picnic

    • If the space being used is close to your space, please wait until the funeral is over before going to visit your grave.

The day of the funeral is a difficult time for families, respecting their space is all we ask.

  • The simple answer to this is yes, we are probably the most secure burial grounds in Ireland.

The easiest way to explain this is by answering the two main questions asked in this regard below.

Will the land be used in the future for some other development?

No, the grounds will always remain a burial ground.

When applying to operate a graveyard in Ireland you need to secure planning permission from the local county council. You need to secure a change of land use from its previous/current use to cemetery provision. Once you secure the planning permission and actually use the grounds for burial purposes it is highly highly unlikely that the council would grant a change of land use again—not that we will be requesting it. In the past ancient graveyards have been moved to allow for vital infrastructural projects—but these are extreme cases and certainly not in the open countryside.

What happens when the grounds are full, how will the graveyard be funded?

A percentage of all income received is placed in a secure stand-alone fund. The value of this fund increases over time. Once the burial ground has reached capacity this (now significant) fund will pay for the annual upkeep of the grounds. Our Memorial Tree service will also help in this regard.

The council would not have given us planning permission unless we showed them the model we use to develop and secure the burial grounds. It is also worth noting that although we don’t get any government aid to manage the grounds (as a lot of graveyards in Ireland do) the maintenance required for a Natural Burial Ground is significantly less than your traditional (Victorian-type) graveyard.

  • Disability access – you can drive to the entrance of the graveyard and there is a flat path around the graveyard, but keep in mind that most of the graveyard is similar to a field. There is a toilet on site, however, there are no disability toilets.

  • Our grounds as a whole are not consecrated – however, individual graves can be. This is done by the blessing of the grave with holy water by the attending priest – and is quite common.

  • Burial takes place at 3.5 / 4 feet allowing for anaerobic decomposition.

  • Yes, of course. You can view our guide to bringing ashes from abroad here.

  • Yes, and people do come from outside of ROI.

  • Yes of course - it is the funeral director who always takes care of the deceased before they get to us - the best way to think about us is we provide the green space - everything else is similar to an ordinary funeral.

  • You get the coffin from your chosen funeral director, and they charge it as part of their funeral package. You can view the different types of green coffins that are available on our sister company’s website: www.greencoffins.ie

  • You can find directions to the burial ground here.

  • We do accept burial shrouds however, due to health and safety, it must have a timber backing/base, you should organise this with your chosen funeral director.

  • No, we don’t allow tree pod burial. This is due to the fact that we don’t know where the seeds have come from and bare root trees have a much better success rate of growing.

  • We often get asked if we have options for ashes at Woodbrook, and the answer is yes!

Firstly, we provide ashes burial plots. Ashes are buried with flowers and/or trees growing above. Typically, one tree oversees a number of ashes burial plots. You can reserve side-by-side plots so that the ashes of loved ones can be buried next to each other.

There are a number of benefits to this:

    • Somewhere to visit – ashes burial plots offer a place for you to visit your loved one which you often don’t get when ashes are scattered.

    • Environmental benefits – burying ashes in a natural graveyard allows for the final resting space of your loved ones to be used as an aid to nature and wildlife conservation.

If you would prefer scattering, we also offer the option to scatter ashes within our stone circle. The stone circle is located in the heart of our grounds and hosts a beautiful oak tree.

  • Yes, people of any religion/without religion can be buried at Woodbrook.

  • Grave markers can be ordered here after a death has taken place.

  • It is not compulsory to be embalmed. However, people who have been embalmed can still be buried at Woodbrook. There are also eco-friendly embalming fluids available.

Burial/Scattering Day Questions

  • Please contact us with the date and time of burial so that we can organise grave opening and closing.

In many cases, the funeral director/celebrant will communicate this information on your behalf.

  • When you arrive at the graveyard for a burial or ashes scattering, one of our team members will meet you at the entrance and guide you to the site of the grave/area of scattering.

  • Yes, planting can take place on the day of burial.

  • Whilst it is not compulsory to use a funeral director – it is advised and we highly recommend it. It is better to contact someone who can lead you and your family through the process – funeral directors exist for a very good reason.

Planting Questions

  • Please stick to the plants that are listed here. If the flower/tree you would like to plant isn't on the list, please contact us.

  • Families and loved ones are welcome to plant trees and flowers on graves.

  • Planting can take place at the time of burial or at a later date.

Pricing Questions

  • All pricing information can be found on this page.

  • Yes, we have payment plans available!

The payment plans are simple - you just divide the total amount payable for the space required by the desired months (up to 48 months) and add €1.50 extra per transaction (the extra €1.50 is to cover our administration costs and the extra bank charges we will be charged).

So, for a 12-month plan for a one-person burial plot, it works out at:

    €1200 / 12 months which is €100

    €100 and the €1.50 = €101.50 per month for 12 months.

For a 24-month plan, it works out at:

    €1200 / 24 months which is €50

    €100 and the €1.50 = €51.50 per month for 24 months.

You can view the pricing of each of our plot types here.

You will need to complete a booking form, which you can find here and return it to us. This can be done by post or email. Our address and email address can be found here.

  • Along with the costs of the actual space other costs apply. These costs can only be paid at the time of actual use, we cannot fix them due to inflation and external conditions outside of our control (e.g. new legislation). We will always keep these costs fair.

    • Interment fee / Grave digging fees are applicable at the time the space is required for use. This fee covers the cost of preparing the grave (opening and closing) for the burial. This fee is currently €450. The interment fee (grave digging fee) is a standard cost in all cemeteries. The interment fee for Ashes Plots (opening and closing) is currently €75.

    • Administration Fee. If a prepaid burial space has not been used within 1 year of a booking then a separate administration fee is payable at the time that the space is required for use. This administration fee will be equal to 3 hours minimum wage at that time.

Grave markers: Small stone grave markers can be used to mark graves if required (this is not essential). The stones used are made from either local granite or slate, often sourced from the grounds themselves. The current cost of the grave markers is €220 and can be ordered here.

    Other fees:

Children's Plot: We do not intend to have a specific area for children's burials - different options are available upon request. For infants there is no plot charge if the parents or guardians proceed with booking their own plots.

Reserving a Space Questions

  • You can reserve a space online here or if you prefer to reserve a space via post, you can follow instructions on this page.

  • You can reserve your own space in advance or alternatively, it can be done by someone else (such as a funeral director, relative etc).

  • Plots can be reserved after a death has taken place or in advance.

We recommend reserving a plot in advance to ensure that there is space in the burial grounds and to protect against any inflation costs.
